Meet PubNub – The Startup That Brought Serverless Computing To The Edge

Though we are living an extremely connected world, it is always challenging for developers to build fully-connected applications. Ask any mobile or IoT developer, and he would say that his number one problem is low-latency communication. PubNub, the San Francisco-based company, is set out to solve the connectivity problem for developers.

PubNub was started in 2010 by Stephen Blum and Todd Greene with a vision to develop a streaming network for developers to build realtime apps as easily as building a web page. Today, the PubNub Data Streaming Network (DSN) is available in more than 15 Points of Presence across the world enabling developers to build connected applications and services.

As a developer, I was impressed when I first encountered PubNub. What instantly hit me was the fact that I could connect two Raspberry Pi devices with no server running in the cloud. With less than ten lines of code, I could easily connect both ends. There are 70+ SDKs from PubNub covering the popular languages and platforms including JavaScript, .NET, Java, Python, and Swift. Any developer can get up and running with PubNub messaging in no time.

To understand the power of PubNub, think of it as a Content Delivery Network (CDN) but for streams. PubNub is to streams what Akamai is to static content. Every message published to PubNub DNS will be delivered across 15 locations covering Asia, Europe, and Americas. Backed by 99.999% SLA, these messages are guaranteed to be delivered within 250ms anywhere in the world. That means a user in Sao Paulo can get an alert within milliseconds of sending the message from Tokyo. Developers are leveraging this edge service in developing innovative applications ranging from chat, multi-player gaming, VoIP and IoT solutions.
