TIBCO Forays Into Edge And Serverless Computing With Project Flogo

TIBCO has invested in two open source projects – Flogo and Mashling – to help developers build microservices for the edge computing layer.

With its strong legacy of building messaging platforms, TIBCO shipped Project Flogo, an open source project licensed under a BSD-styled license for developing lightweight, serverless applications on the edge. Project Flogo aims to simplify developing and deploying microservices and IoT applications. Written in Go Lang, the software can run on x64 and ARM architectures, making it a viable choice to run services in resource-constrained environments such as a Raspberry Pi.

Project Flogo is targeted at two scenarios – microservices and IoT applications. The applications written for Flogo can be easily packaged and deployed in containers making it an ideal candidate for developing cloud-native applications.

The core strength of Flogo lies in its architecture which encourages clean separation of code and configuration. Developers declare the message flow in an external JSON file before compiling the target binary. The deployment unit of Flogo is called a flow, which exposes an endpoint along with a set of rules to trigger internal or external services. A flow can be deployed in the microservices environment or can be embedded in an IoT solution.
