The Ultimate List Of Announcements Expected From AWS re:Invent 2017 – Part 1

It’s that time of the year when Las Vegas gets painted red by thousands of cloud enthusiasts and professionals gathered to attend AWS re:Invent, the mega event hosted by Amazon.

With each passing year, AWS re:Invent only becomes bigger and better. The last week of November will witness tens of thousands of technologists working hard and playing hard in Las Vegas. This year Amazon is taking over the famous Las Vegas Strip – a stretch of 4.2 miles with many hotels, casinos and pubs – to run multiple technology sessions, tracks and networking events. What was once confined to The Venetian is now spread to almost all the hotels of the strip. The exponential growth of re:Invent is an indication of the ever-growing list of services, features, and of course, the revenue of AWS.

Though AWS hosts smaller events throughout the year in various places of the world, re:Invent acts as a forcing function for the company to announce significant updates to its cloud platform. Engineering teams feverishly work towards this milestone to ensure that their product is included in the announcements. AWS partners make sure that they have marquee wins that they can showcase at the event. This conference is undoubtedly the most anticipated event for the industry professionals.

As we gear up to attend yet another re:Invent, here is the master list of announcements that you can expect from AWS. Some of them are obvious, and some are just a part of my wish list. I am curious to see how many of these will make it to the keynotes delivered by Andy Jassy and Werner Vogels.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

There is no doubt that AI will take the centre stage at re:Invent. This is going to the key theme of the event.

When compared to its rivals, AWS is lagging behind in AI and ML services. At this re:Invent, I expect artificial intelligence to steal the show. There are many opportunities for Amazon to deliver managed ML and AI platform to customers. Don’t forget that Amazon.com has been exploiting machine learning for decades to achieve enhanced shopping experience for its e-commerce site. AWS is all set to expose the secret sauce as services to developers.

I expect intelligent vision, translation, text analytics, video pattern recognition and recommendation services to join existing AI services such as Lex, Polly, and Rekognition. These API will help customers consume AI without investing in advanced data science skills.
