Open Neural Network Exchange Project Aims To Bring Interoperability Among Deep Learning Frameworks

AWS, Facebook and Microsoft have collaborated to build Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX), which makes it possible to reuse trained neural network models across multiple frameworks. Since its announcement in September 2017, various players including AMD, ARM, IBM, Intel, Huawei, NVIDIA and Qualcomm have announced their support.

One of the critical challenges in developing neural network models lies in choosing the right framework. Data scientists and developers have to pick the right tool from a plethora of choices that include Caffe2, PyTorch, Apache MXNet, Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit, and TensorFlow. Once a model is trained and evaluated in a specific framework, it is tough to port the trained model to another framework. This led to lack of interoperability among available deep learning frameworks.

ONNX aims to provide a format through which fully trained deep learning models can be exported from one framework to another. For example, a convolutional neural network (CNN) built using PyTorch to recognize image patterns can be easily exported to Apache MXNet. The goal of ONNX is to avoid building and optimizing the neural network in each framework from scratch. In the above example, developers can import the PyTorch-based CNN model in Apache MXNet and use it for inference without the need to train and optimize the model. This interoperability enables reuse of models across a variety of frameworks.
