VMware Adds Edge Computing Support To vSphere Through AWS Greengrass Integration

VMware announced the availability of AWS Greengrass appliance for vSphere in preview. This integration lets VMware customers take advantage of edge computing capabilities powered by Amazon Web Services.

The AWS Greengrass appliance is packaged as an Ubuntu VM available in an OVA template. It can be easily imported into vSphere, Fusion, and Workstation environments. VMware has included the latest version of Greengrass runtime and tools to get started with the device integration. Once configured, the appliance can be managed from AWS Console which is available as a Greengrass Core device.

AWS Greengrass was announced by Andy Jassy at the re:Invent event in December 2016. It became generally available in June 2017. The software is a cornerstone of AWS’ edge computing strategy. It has a small footprint that can run on system-on-a-chip devices like Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone powered by ARM processors. It can also run in full-blown x86 servers in large data center environments. The compute layer of Greengrass is delivered through AWS Lambda, the first serverless computing platform, which was introduced a few years ago.
